CASTLEBAR SECONDS 0 BUCCANEERS THIRDS 12

BUCCANEERS THIRDS fashioned a tough Connacht Junior 2A League 12-0 victory over Castlebar Seconds at Cloondeash in dreadful weather conditions on Saturday night.

This was a battle of wills from start to finish with the atrocious weather causing the game to be stopped on two occasions. Buccs were deserving winners, being that bit smarter than their hosts. They opened the scoring with a 16th minute try from a well-worked move at a lineout followed by a fine maul from which Luke Callinan sent Cameron Brill over for a try. Darren Costello’s conversion from wide rebounded off an upright and so the Pirates led 5-0 at the halftime respite.

The game remained finely balanced until the closing stages when Sean Byrne tapped a penalty swiftly and caught the home defence off-guard to score an opportunist try which Costello converted to seal the 12-0 win. Young hooker Brill was Buccs man of the match while Declan Brady put in a serious number of tackles in the pack where Byrne’s cuteness was a vital component and substitute Anthony Hughes also made an impact. Rory Grenham marshalled his backline effectively.

Sean Flynn reminds all squad members that training is now being doubled! Sessions (training sessions that is!) on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. and also Fridays at 7 p.m.
