GIRLS TAG BLITZ

Here come the girls!!!!

On Thursday March 30th Dubarry Park was a female only zone as the club hosted a Girls Tag Blitz between local schools Our Lady’s Bower, Colaiste Chiarain and Athlone Community College. The blitz day was the accumulation of four weeks of sessions in each of the schools, coached by Tina McKiernan and Lorna Stuart-Trainor with the most welcome support and guidance of Wendy Hickey of the Connacht Branch IRFU.

Each of the schools welcomed coaches and encouraged girls to such an extent that there were over 70 players at the Blitz. It was fantastic to see how the players had improved and honed their skills over those weeks. The games on the day were hugely competitive with great moves and use of space on display. There was a festive atmosphere that even the showers couldn’t dampen.

Thank you to all the students who participated, their wonderful teachers and supportive schools; it was a pleasure to have them at Dubarry Park. Thank you to the referees on the day Brendan Wilkins, Declan Brady, Lawrence Berrigan and Wendy Hickey and also to Martin Joyce and Diarmuid Sloane for logistics and catering on the day.

For any girls looking to try out rugby please don’t hesitate to contact Lorna on 0868794465.
