BUCCANEERS 17 CORINTHIANS 14
BUCCANEERS U-16s welcomed Corinthians to Dubarry Park on Saturday in perfect autumnal conditions. This Buccs team were well pumped up for this Connacht League game and started in full flow after a rigorous warm up. Winger Ryan Hughes ran 70 metres but was bustled into touch in the corner. Corinthians came back and with their first attack scored a soft try in the corner.
The game went back and forward until Adam Murphy plunged over from close range after continuous Buccs pressure. Corinthians were next to score when slow ball was charged down and they scored under the posts. But Buccs came storming back with some great breaks and eventually scored through Murphy again. Eoin Carr converted his two kicks and the sides were locked at 14-14.
Buccs remained on the offensive and took the opportunity to score a penalty from a difficult position by Darragh Murray. With time running out Corinthians forced their way towards the home 22 but a fine intervention earned the Athlone boys a penalty which they dispatched out of play to win a keenly contested game 17-14.
This was Corinthians first defeat in three seasons and they took the loss with great dignity. It would be unfair to single out any Buccaneers players in what was an outstanding squad effort.
