U-14s WIN PLAY-OFF AT WESTPORT

WESTPORT 14 BUCCANEERS 38

Buccaneers U14s travelled to Westport on Saturday to play their Connacht Division 1 Seeding playoff. The perfect weather conditions helped to produce an open and exciting match between two well coached teams.

Buccaneers started the match brightly and took the lead through a Robert Connor try after a well worked move. Westport fought back but brave defensive work from Buccs kept the home team at bay. The Athlone side finished the half strongly and tries from Will Browne and another from Connor plus two conversions by Corey Kelly saw the visitors lead 19-0 at the break.

Westport started the second half with renewed energy and scored a well-deserved try. However, Buccaneers responded strongly and scored two quick tries from Aaron Costello and Daniel Murphy. The last ten minutes of this end-to-end match saw both teams cross the line for tries. Westport scored first, but Buccaneers had the last say with Fearghal Kelly touching down under the posts and Jack Costello converting.
Well done to all the players and coaches. Thanks to Westport for a sporting match. Best of luck to former Buccaneers coach Eimhin Griffin and his son SarĂ¡n who are now part of the U-14 Westport set up.
