Buccaneers Women’s and Men’s Touch Rugby Teams in action in Maynooth

Buccaneers Women’s Touch Rugby team was in action on Saturday at the Women’s Club Championship in Maynooth University hosted by MU Barnhall.

The Ladies travelled with a depleted squad, missing a few key players for what was the second Club Championship of 2025.
They started slowly with a 5-0 defeat against Cooke Warriors. In the second game Buccs bounced back in some style with a strong performance against Racoon West and a 5-4 win. Keeva Mooney got two tries and there was one try each from Niamh Purtill, Lexie Garvey and Eimear Gorman.

Buccs took on eventual winners Old Wesley Tipsters in the next game and the ladies put it up to them. Tries from Alice Behan and Kerri Edwards had Buccs level before a late surge from OWT sealed a 4-2 win.

Buccs took on newcomers Eastside Eagles in Game 3 and put in their best performance of the day. The Belfast side couldn’t deal with the pace of Keeva Mooney and Niamh Purtill who got 5 tries between them. Niamh got the try of the day when she ran from deep inside her own half, beating several defenders to score. Further tries from Lexie Garvey and Kerri Edwards gave Buccs a 7-2 win.

Buccs were now into the Bronze Medal match, finishing 3rd of 5 teams. They faced Raccoon West again and the Galway side got their revenge on Buccs winning 4-1 with captain Aoibhín Tynan getting Buccaneers’ only try. Congratulations to Old Wesley Tipsters who beat Cooke Warriors in the final to take the Cup.
