Buccaneers Welcome Connacht Women for Invitational Rugby
Buccaneers RFC was the venue for a fantastic morning of women’s rugby on Saturday as the club hosted the opening round of the inaugural Connacht Women’s Invitational Cup. Buccaneers welcomed Our Lady’s Boys Club, University College Galway and South-East Galway Warriors, with all four sides getting valuable game time through a series of 25-minute matches.
The morning was about much more than results. For some players, it was their first opportunity to pull on a jersey and experience competitive rugby, while others were getting back onto the pitch and building new combinations ahead of the season. It was also an important day for developing clubs, with players who had previously competed as part of amalgamated teams now getting the opportunity to line out together under their own club colours.
The rugby was played in a positive and enjoyable atmosphere, showcasing the continued growth of the women’s game across the province. A special word of thanks goes to referees Rory, George and Abraham who ensured the morning ran professionally and smoothly.
Our senior women would also like to thank the groundsman at Buccaneers RFC for getting the pitches to tipp top condition and marking out all ahead of the day. None of this is possible without the assistance of Geraldine Kenny, our club administrator, and the support of Tom & Pascal from The Bounty Bar & Restaurant. Special mention to RBK Athlone as Team Sponsors and to AIA Loss Assessors, Athlone & Castlebar.
The action continues next Saturday when Buccaneers Womens team travel to Creggs for the next round of the Invitational Cup. 12pm KO. If you would like to hear more about playing and or supporting Buccaneers Senior Women please contact Amy O Connor 087 7510886. There are open roles on the sideline for assistant coaches and kit person also.
