NOEL RYAN

It was with immense shock and sadness that the news of the tragic passing in a drowning accident in Malta of Noel (Noelie) Ryan reached the club.

Noelie was that rare breed … a one-off character whose good-natured banter and humour was enjoyed not only in the club but far and wide. He loved nothing better than a bit of mischievous craic, even when he was playing in the front row for Athlone RFC. He remained a witty constant around the club after his playing days and was a formidable opponent in squash.

Noelie was renowned for the service he provided in his shop in Mardyke Street, particularly to families kitting out their children in school uniforms. He was a true Athlonian and took considerable pride in the town where he supported many sporting organisations. His roles as a priest in mock weddings for both St. Francis FC and Buccaneers RFC could have set the template for Fr. Ted!

Noelie was a force of nature who loved attending sporting occasions, and all the better if he could get in on a schoolboy ticket! There will be countless stories told recalling funny incidents he was involved in.

Noel will be greatly missed by many, but especially by his wife Deirdre, daughters Aoife and Sinead, and all the wider family on his untimely passing. Heartfelt condolences are extended to them at this very difficult and sad time.

Rest in peace Noelie … ni bheidh a leithead aris.
