SECONDS AWAY TO CREGGS IN CUP

BUCCANEERS SECONDS face a difficult assignment when they take on Creggs in the Connacht Junior Cup at The Green, Creggs, on Sunday. This quarter-final duel has a 2.30 p.m. kick off on the 4G surface. Buccs lost 29-18 when the teams met recently in the league at the same venue. Creggs topped that league table but lost the final 18-15 to Connemara recently so they will be smarting and eager to get some silverware to reflect on their good season.

However, Buccs should really have got something from the league meeting between these sides when they were a bit too much off-the-cuff for their own good in that match. They have bags of potential and pace in their ranks with Ross Murphy-Sweeney and Harry Hughes being a threat on the wings. Half backs Gerard Fallon and Frankie Hopkins dove-tailed nicely against Dunmore and Colin Daly is a cool head in the centre. Add Graham Lynch into the mix and that Pirates backline will cause problems for the hosts. Sean O’Connell and Rory Grenham can be counted on to hold their own in the front row battle, while Ryan O’Meara, Fergus Galvin, Brian McDonnell and Sam Kroupa will relish the challenge ahead of them including what will surely be a vocal partisan crowd. If Buccs click they can spring a surprise.
