Buccaneers played arch rivals Corinthians in an eagerly awaited Connacht U-15 League encounter on Saturday at Dubarry Park. Buccs were undone early in the game when a regulation pass was dropped and Corinthians hacked through to score under the posts. Buccs, however, didn’t let this setback deter them and spent most of the remainder of the half in the opposition territory without managing to score despite repeated attacks on the visitors’ line. Another sucker punch followed when Corinthians scored from a scrum that left the half time score at 12-0 in favour of the Galway club.
The second half followed the same pattern as Buccs squandered several chances, even crossing the line on occasion, before Corinthians scored again on the stroke of full time. If ever a game wasn’t reflected in the score line this was it. The home team can be proud of their performance which on another day would have given them victory and were best served by forwards Sean Rohan, Patrick Brazil and Michael Kenny. All of the squad wish Matias a speedy recovery.
BUCCANEERS:- P Brazil, S Rohan, S Doyle, M Jurginas, M Kenny, P Egan, O Flynn, N Tallon, F Lyons, E Joyce, L Gossy, L Cassidy, R Gahan, M Kilclyne, D.Reid, M Fallon, P Dolan, T McCay and S Drummond.
On Sunday Buccaneers travelled to Headford to play the local team who they had beaten in an earlier league game. Buccs produced their best performance of the season with flowing backs moves mixed in with judicious kicking by out half and captain Finn Duffy. A dominant scrum and some excellent rucking produced a strong platform for the backs to shine.
A stronger home team took a lot of defending with centres Sonny Drummond and Brian Mulvihill to the fore in this department. Up front Conor Reid, Fionn ‘Spuds’ Lyons and Peadar Dolan were outstanding. Buccs have worked hard to gather a large squad at U-15’s and it was fantastic to see all that hardwork paying off with 41 players togging out at the weekend. To see both teams play so well is a credit to all involved and augers well for the years to come.
