YOUTHS ROUND-UP

Buccaneers welcomed Carrick-on-Shannon to Dubarry Park on Sunday and won 34-10 in the Connacht U-15 Cup. Three tries by Sean O’Hara, two by Adam Murphy and one by captain Brian Rourke ensured a comfortable win for the home team who played some excellent running rugby. On top in set play, Buccs passing was at times a bit wayward as they endeavoured to put away the boys from Leitrim.

Buccaneers travelled to near neighbours Ballinasloe on Saturday to play their last group game in the Connacht U-16 Cup. Conditions were good for Buccs free-flowing rugby. After absorbing early pressure, the Athlone boys scored first with a well worked try which was the first of John Paul’s four touchdowns. 67-14 was the final score with the Athlonians putting together bouts of intricate handling to tear apart the home team’s defence. Best for a Buccs outfit, who will have to improve in their discipline, were James Kelly, Jacob Bourke and man of the match John Paul.
